OUTLET CITY METZINGEN

The Outletcity in the German city of Metzingen, south of Stuttgart, is considered the largest outlet in Germany. The shopping city within a city contains numerous shops of luxury brands as well as restaurants and cafés. The existing Outletcity was to be extended to the north on the site of an abandoned textile factory, with further commercial spaces on the ground floor and administrative offices on the upper floor. By means of an architectural competition, a new identity was to be given to the exterior areas and facades of the site.

The proposed design reflects the history of the site as the location of a textile factory and reinterprets it in an architectural way. The facades of the buildings feature free and rounded forms and drape over the structures like textiles blowing in the wind. The offices on the upper floors are skilfully hidden behind the perforated metal panels, while the view is focused on the display windows of the shops below.

A simple and restrained colour palette reflects elegance and quality, but without distracting from the shops. The targeted integration of plants and seating in the outdoor areas guarantee the highest shopping experiences and make the Outletcity a meeting place for the entire town.
