METROBUS

Travel as an experience

urbanism

The new Metrobus stations are part of the large-scale modernisation of public transport in South Tyrol. The project is located on the territory of the municipality of Eppan. The design for the new identity of the Überetsch Express Metrobuses relies on an interplay of local materials and clean lines. The competition launched by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano serves to connect the historic city centre of Bolzano with the surrounding areas beyond the Adige river and the villages of Eppan and Kaltern.

The new architecture of the bus stops blends into the urban landscape by picking up on elements that stand for the “South Tyrol” brand, such as the silhouette, which is reminiscent of the Dolomites, and the colour scheme, which reflects the landscape and its colour variations throughout the seasons. The main design element is colour, from the continuous green line that starts folded as a canopy and ends as an island, to the primary and secondary colours of the “South Tyrol” brand chosen for the display panels. The entire structure is made of wood and metal, with integrated digital screens and intelligent lighting system. The wooden canopy protects passengers from the rain and allows sheltered boarding and disembarking. The main theme is the integration and use of public space. The object is about 5 metres long and offers citizens a reference point in the environment. The design meets functional, ergonomic and sustainable requirements and provides a pleasant travel experience by communicating the local identity in a clear and direct way.
