CABLE CAR JENESIEN

Panorama infrastructure

2018
infrastructure

Above the city of Bolzano lies Jenesien. For 80 years, a small cable car connected the village with the South Tyrolean capital. An architectural competition aimed to breathe fresh air into the public transport system with a new cable car and create a new connecting infrastructure for commuters and tourists.

The precisely analysed flows of movement and air currents are taken up in the invitingly curved form of the two buildings and allow them to merge with their surroundings. At the valley station, the parking spaces were extended and the passing road was moved to the south in order to provide an optimal connection to the new infrastructure. A semi-circular forecourt offers relaxation through seating and a monumental staircase leads to the cable car. The large two-storey glass façade offers views of the surrounding panorama. While during the day it reflects the surrounding vineyards and the peaks of the Dolomites, at night the façade becomes transparent and transforms the station to a meeting point and landmark for the city. The mountain station, on the other hand, was deliberately planned to be small to minimise the structural impact on nature. The landscape is extended and drawn up along the building, culminating in the new viewing platform on the roof of the building. The view of the city of Bolzano and the Dolomite panorama are the clear focus here.
