FIRE STATION LAJEN

The camouflage landmark

2017
infrastructure

The village of Lajen towers above the Eisack Valley against a backdrop of magnificent mountain peaks. Similar to the rest of the region, the village is strongly characterized by voluntary community life. Central to this is the volunteer fire department. Since the existing premises of the fire station in the community hall no longer meet contemporary space requirements, a new, modern fire station is to be built in the centre of the village.

The design nestles partially underground into its surroundings. The existing green space at the site extends up over the building and covers it underneath. The children’s playground is expanded and spreads over the entire roof area. Two large skylights offer curious children and adults a glimpse into the garage with the emergency vehicles below. In addition to the garage for the vehicles, the basement houses all the technical and storage rooms and the changing rooms. The upper floor, with its recreation room and kitchenette, opens onto the playground and has direct access to the green spaces. The sculptural hose tower pierces the surface and rises into the sky.

The use of natural stone pays homage to nature and rural architecture. The absence of conventional parapets results in a completely unobstructed and endless view of the Dolomites. To ensure safety nevertheless, the terrain is deliberately lowered at the edge, forming a natural fall protection.
